When you are not in rehearsal or practicing your instrument, what other activities or hobbies do you enjoy?

When not rehearsing or practicing my instrument, I volunteer my time to the Ocean City Environmental Commission as the Student Liasion. As the liaison, I collaborate with city commissioners to coordinate annual events to teach others about the environment and connect the city to the high school as the president of the Student Environmental Association.

I am also a New Jersey Governor STEM Scholar and actively participating in a research project that focuses on identifying factors that may affect pediatric health accessibility throughout the five regions of the US using the results from the 2020 National Survey on Children’s Health.

I was also elected as the Lieutenant Governor of Division 1 of the NJ Key Club and act as the liaison between my six divisional clubs and the board. My duties include: creating and publishing a monthly newsletter called “Madeline’s Mail,” holding monthly Divisional Council Meetings, and maintaining constant communication with all club officers and advisors. Additionally, I chair the International Programs Committee and District Educational Conference Workshops Committee on the District Board. I create agendas, delegate tasks, engage all committee members, lead meetings, and connect with and promote internationally recognized service partners through these committees and at the conference.

What is one unique attribute about you that people find surprising?

I have been learning American Sign Language at my school for the past four years and have recently been awarded “Superior,” the second highest ranking, on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI).

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? What do you see yourself doing?

At Rutgers University, I will be majoring in pharmacy in their 6-year PharmD program. This 6-year program starts with two years of pre-professional study and then four years of professional training at the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. After completing three years of the program, I hope to enroll in Rutgers’ Dual PharmD/MD Program, which will combine the world of medicine and pharmacy to gain a broader understanding of healthcare. With these two degrees, I hope to specialize in anesthesiology and pain management. Living and caring for my two 85-year-old grandparents and watching them suffer from pain stemming from their backs to their chests motivates me to use my education to study pain management to help those suffering and relieve their pain. After specializing in anesthesiology and pain management, I hope to develop a program that helps prescribe patients with the correct formulas of medications to control their pain levels using my background in computer science. This program will help patients get customized prescriptions based on their pain needs instead of having a trial-and-error process to find the correct dosage for pain relief.
