Young Musicians Debut Orchestra - PYO Music Institute
Kenneth T. BeanDirector & Conductor

Young Musicians Debut Orchestra (YMDO) introduces students to the world of symphonic orchestral repertoire, bringing together strings, winds, brass, and percussion. Regular sectional coaching and challenging standard classical music repertoire makes YMDO an ideal next step for students progressing into advanced symphony orchestra programs. Many students matriculate into YMDO from string-only (such as Prysm Strings), wind-only (such as Philadelphia Youth Concert Band), and group instrumental classes (such as Tune Up Philly), as well as from school music programs and private studios.

Location: Saint Patrick Hall (240 South 20th St, Philadelphia, PA 19103)

Schedule: Saturdays, 1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. (mid-September – late May)

Open to: String, woodwind, brass, and percussion players

Ages: 11 – 17

Why Join YMDO?

  • YMDO is the bridge between many in-school and after-school programs into symphony orchestra playing. Symphony orchestras combine strings, winds, and percussion into a single ensemble – YMDO faculty help students manage this transition into larger group playing with sectional classes and hands-on experience.
  • Members develop core ensemble skills like active listening, blending, and musical discipline through professional coaching with expert faculty and conductors.
  • In YMDO, members learn the skill sets required to advance along PYOMI’s orchestral pathway programming. The Philadelphia Young Artists Orchestra (PYAO) is the next step on the orchestral pathway, diving into more complex repertoire.
  • Members showcase their work performing in premier venues, including Temple Performing Arts Center and The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, to gain confidence and large-ensemble concert experience.
  • YMDO students also have exclusive access to PYO Music Institute resources including audition preparation, community music events, discounted or free concert tickets from PYOMI’s community partners, the Master Class & Advanced Orchestral Training Program, which supports their musical growth and provides future opportunities.
