Philadelphia, PA (March 10, 2016) — It’s time to applaud nearly 400 young musicians of PYO Music Institute (PYO) as they perform in the 2016 PYO Organization Showcase Performance at Verizon Hall, in The Kimmel Center for Performing Arts on Sunday, April 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. Each student is a member of one of the five ensembles within PYO, which is one of the oldest and most respected community music education and youth orchestra performance programs in the United States.
President and PYO Music Director Louis Scaglione is proud of the accomplishments of the students. “In this year’s PYO Showcase concert, we will present nearly 400 students, aged 6 to 21, in their various music ensembles. Their performance is a testament to their growth through the year. It is an honor to work with these accomplished students.” PYO students go on to excel in many diverse fields, including 10 alumni who are currently members of the prestigious Philadelphia Orchestra.
The talented young musicians of PYO are from the Delaware Valley and involved in independent ensembles designed to meet specific needs and experience levels. They are selected through a competitive audition process. The five ensembles range from full orchestras to specifically Brass and String ensemblesThe ensembles are: the PYO Music Institute, conducted by President and Music Director Louis Scaglione, which includes 115 student musicians ranging in age from 14 to 21; the Philadelphia Young Artists Orchestra (PYAO), PYO’s companion ensemble for 10 to 18 year-old musicians and conducted and directed by Maestra Rosalind Erwin, who is the Drexel University Orchestra Conductor; the Philadelphia Region Youth String Music (PRYSM), the all string orchestra division, performing under the direction of Gloria DePasquale, who is a cellist with The Philadelphia Orchestra; Bravo Brass, the all brass ensemble for promising high-school instrumentalists, conducted and directed by Paul Bryan, who is Curtis Institute’s Dean of Faculty and Students; and, Tune Up Philly, conducted by Director Paul Smith, the after-school program that offers musical instruments and instruction to children in economically challenged areas of Philadelphia.
