Schedule and Audition

Auditions for the 2020-2021 season will be online video recorded auditions instead of live in-person auditions. Submit your audition materials here.

To submit an audition:

  1. Submit required audition materials via Acceptd, the official online audition platform of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra organization. (Note: there is no fee to submit an audition)
  2. Wait for official contact from the PYO office. You can review the complete application timeline here.
  3. Once accepted, you will be emailed instructions for completing an online registration form.

Prysm Strings and Prysm Strings Young Artists Requirements

UPDATE - October 13, 2020: PYO Music Institute is still accepting auditions on a rolling basis for available positions in all ensembles for double bass, viola, oboe, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, and percussion.

Video Submission Guidelines

  • Auditions are open to students ranging in age from 6 through 14 years.
  • Students are selected and placed by the Directors in either Prysm Strings or Prysm Strings Young Artists based on musical, maturity and experience.
  • Prysm Strings students must have finished Suzuki Book 4, Prysm Strings Young Artists students, Suzuki Book 2, or equivalent.
  • Placement in either orchestra is based on the strength of the entire audition and at the sole discretion of the Directors.
  • All students must be enrolled in private lessons.

Audition Requirements for PRYSM STRINGS YOUNG ARTISTS

  • Prysm Strings Young Artists students should play the following required scales.
  • Students are to bring one solo piece of their choosing from Suzuki Book 1 or 2 (or equivalent.)


Audition Requirements for PRYSM STRINGS

  • Prysm Strings students should play the following required scales.
  • Students are to play one solo piece of their choosing.
  • All students considered for Prysm Strings must be proficient with vibrato.
  • All Cellists must select scales which demonstrate the use of thumb position.
  • Students are to prepare the following excerpt for their respective instrument:

Violin
Viola
Cello
Bass


Audition Requirements for Students to Advance from PRYSM STRINGS YOUNG ARTISTS to PRYSM STRINGS

  • Prysm Strings Young Artists students should play the following required scales.
  • Students are to play one solo piece of their choosing.
  • All students considered for Prysm Strings must be proficient with vibrato.
  • All Cellists must select scales which demonstrate the use of thumb position.

The applicant and/or parent/guardian agree that all decisions concerning placement and participation in the Prysm Strings program are at the sole discretion of the artistic staff, and that their decisions are final.

Annual tuition for the 2020-2021 season is $1795.  A non-refundable deposit of $550 is due at the time an accepted student registers for the Prysm Strings program. Tuition balance is due by the first rehearsal of the concert season.

Our new name conveys the breadth and depth of our programs and the impact we are having on more students in more ways than ever.  We are excited about this change as we believe it is a much better description of our organization, with the potential of continued growth and expansion into the future.
