Young Musicians Debut Orchestra (YMDO), formerly the Philadelphia Young Musicians Orchestra (PYMO), is a beginning- to intermediate-level full symphonic orchestra that provides most students with their first introduction to large orchestral playing. While its players matriculate from Prysm Strings, Tune Up Philly, or other string orchestra programs after several years of string ensemble experience, YMDO is often the first full orchestral playing experience for many wind, brass, and percussion students.
Through standard orchestral repertoire, students are challenged to hone their talents for listening, blending, balancing, and making music within the full symphony context. Principal players are also encouraged to develop leadership skills, and less-experienced players learn from their peers and PYO Music Institute’s acclaimed professional faculty. YMDO prepares its members for participation in Philadelphia Young Artists Orchestra — and, eventually, the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra.
Young Musicians Debut Orchestra auditions are open to student string, woodwind, brass, and percussion players. The Young Musicians Debut Orchestra (YMDO) accepts students ages 11 through 17.
YMDO rehearsals take place on Saturdays from 1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., mid-September through late-May, at Saint Patrick Hall (240 South 20th St, Philadelphia, PA 19103).
