Building the Foundation for Tomorrow: Highlights from the 2026 Gala - PYO Music Institute

The Foundation

On Friday, March 27, the PYO Music Institute welcomed more than 300 distinguished guests to The Union League of Philadelphia for its 2026 Gala, an evening defined by extraordinary music, meaningful connection, and a shared commitment to the future of music education in our region.

From the moment guests arrived, the energy of the evening was unmistakable. The reception featured a vibrant art show and live painting experience by Studio Incamminati, transforming the lounge into a dynamic creative space where visual and musical artistry met in real time.

The Centerpiece

The evening’s centerpiece was a seated dinner in Lincoln Hall and was accompanied by a stirring performance from the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra. From the opening notes of the National Anthem to a triumphant finale, the ensemble delivered a program that showcased both technical excellence and artistic maturity. A highlight of the performance was a featured solo by PYO alumnus Dillon Scott, now a student at the Curtis Institute of Music, who performed Max Bruch’s Romanze with remarkable poise and musical depth. This was an inspiring example of the artistic journeys that begin at PYO Music Institute.

The Impact

We extend our deepest gratitude for our speakers of the evening, Meg Bragle, WRTI’s Classical Host, and Bob Pick, PYO Music Institute’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

PYO Music Institute was honored to feature our community partner, Lyra Society, an organization who shares the same vision for accessible music education.

Following dinner, the celebration continued with dessert and dancing, highlighted by a high-energy performance from the Philadelphia Youth Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Justin Faulkner, PYOMI’s Director of Jazz and a three-time Grammy Award nominee. The ensemble brought a fresh, electric close to the night, culminating in a special moment as Faulkner joined the students on drum set, an unforgettable experience that exemplified both mentorship and artistry at the highest level.

The evening also reflected the lasting impact of PYOMI’s alumni network. Alongside Justin Faulkner and Dillon Scott who played an active role in the evening’s beautiful entertainment, we want to thank Patrick Bailey, PYOMI’s Director of Education and Director of the Philadelphia Youth Symphonic Band, who plays a vital role in the success of the Institute’s ensemble programs, Hellen Gerhold, Executive Director of Lyra Society. The evening demonstrated the strength of an organization where alumni return not only as accomplished artists, but as leaders shaping the next generation of musicians.

A particularly meaningful highlight of the evening was a visit from Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, who spent time speaking directly with students and sharing words of encouragement. Her presence underscored the importance of arts education in shaping the next generation of leaders and creators in our city.

The Vision for Tomorrow

Beyond the performances, the Gala served as a powerful platform to advance PYO Music Institute’s vision for the future. This year’s theme, Building the Foundation for Tomorrow, celebrated the momentum behind the revitalization of Saint Patrick Hall in Rittenhouse, a transformative project that will expand access, enhance accessibility, and create an inspiring home for over 800 young musicians each year.

The event brought together an extraordinary cross-section of Philadelphia’s civic, business, and cultural leadership, reinforcing the Institute’s role as a vital connector between the arts and the broader community.

Reflecting on the evening, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Bob Pick shared:

“What a night! I woke up this morning with a genuine sense of pride… More than 300 guests, 150 student musicians… together in one place for what has become one of the top arts-business events in the City of Philadelphia… I am extraordinarily pleased and proud, and deeply appreciative of all the work that went into this.”

As the PYO Music Institute looks ahead, the success of the 2026 Gala stands as both a celebration and a catalyst, fueling the continued growth of its programs and the realization of a revitalized home that will serve generations of young musicians to come.
