PRYSM & TUP
Side-by-Side with Philadelphia Orchestra

Musicians of the Philadelphia Orchestra will travel to the Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Center in North Philadelphia to give aspiring musicians in Philadelphia Region Youth String Music (PRYSM) and Tune Up Philly, program divisions of the PYO Music Institute organization (PYO), a chance of a lifetime. The professionals will provide side-by-side instruction and then invite the students and audience members to stay for an open rehearsal.

This special event, 4-5:30 PM on Tuesday, May 13, offers an unparalleled opportunity for these young musicians to learn from and perform with the best musicians in the region. The event, which will be conducted by Christian Macelaru, Conductor-in-Residence of The Philadelphia Orchestra, is free and open to the public.

“As we close a successful season and prepare to embark on a tour of Asia, we are energized to connect directly through music, people to people across Philadelphia’s communities,” said Philadelphia Orchestra President and CEO Allison Vulgamore. “We are moved by gratitude for all of our home communities and look forward to working with the students in PYO Music Institute’s Tune Up Philly and PRSYM, as each time we experience firsthand together the transformative power of music."

More than 100 members of PRYSM and PRYSM Young Artists (string ensembles of the PYO) and Tune Up Philly (PYO’s after-school outreach program) will have the chance to participate in this extraordinary musical education experience. Gloria DePasquale, Director and Conductor of PRYSM and also a cellist with The Philadelphia Orchestra explains, “This opportunity will not only be educational for our young students, it will provide inspiration that will motivate them for their entire lives.”

The afternoon will begin with Maestro Macelaru conducting Philadelphia Orchestra members in a side-by-side rehearsal with the TUP students, working on pieces by Schumann and special pieces written by TUP Associate Director Paul Smith. The Maestro will then work with PRYSM and PRYSM Young Artists on a performance of the Capriol Suite by Peter Warlock, and PRYSM will perform Mozart’s Eine Klein Nachtmusic and Leroy Anderson’s Jazz Pizzicato with the professional musicians at their side.

The event will take place in the new Worship and Performing Arts Center of the Salvation Army Kroc Neighborhood Center, one of the sites utilized by TUP for its after school program which draws children from throughout the community. It’s a boon to everyone in the vicinity, as TUP Director Delia Raab-Snyder observes, “This is a great opportunity for the kids and the community to have the Philadelphia Orchestra in their own neighborhood.”
